Project Title: Advanced Studies on Structure and Dynamics of Exotic Nuclei
Financing agency: CNCS - UEFISCDI, Program IDEI
Project Type/Code: Exploratory Research Project / PN-II-ID-PCE-2011-3-0153
Contract Number 5 / 05.10.2011
Project Summary: Summary: The study of the structure and dynamics of exotic nuclei both theoretically and experimentally is nowadays one of the most active fields of research in nuclear physics. The nuclei with unusual N/Z  ratios are proper candidates to get insight into the fundamental interactions and symmetries. These nuclei have relevance for nucleosynthesis and significance  for astrophysical scenarios concerning the rp-process and the r-process path. The proton-rich nuclei in the A~70 mass region and the neutron-rich nuclei in the A~100 region manifest shape coexistence and mixing. A self-consistent description of their structure and decay requires theoretical methods going beyond the mean field approaches as well as realistic effective interactions and large model spaces. In the present project microscopic many-body approaches belonging to the Vampir-Monster model family will be used to address essential questions concerning the structure and dynamics of exotic nuclei and tests of fundamental interactions and symmetries. An essential step on the way to achieve a realistic description of exotic nuclei will be the systematic derivation of suitable effective nucleon-nucleon interactions for particular mass regions and their extrapolations to proton- and neutron-drip lines. These investigations are important   for the  science program at the existing and future Radioactive Isotope Beams facilities, such us SPIRAL2 at GANIL, NUSTAR at FAIR/GSI, FRIB at MSU, RIKEN in Japan.

Domain of the project:
Domain:  PE. MATHEMATICS, PHYSICAL SCIENCES, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION, ENGINEERING, UNIVERSE AND EARTH SCIENCES
Subdomain: PE2. Fundamental constituents of matter: particle, nuclear, plasma, atomic, molecular, gas, and optical physics
Main Research Area: PE2_3. Nuclear physics
Secondary Research Area: PE2_1. Fundamental interactions and fields

Keywords: exotic nuclei; shape coexistence; beta decay; beyond-mean-field approaches; realistic effective interactions

Objectives/Activities:
- Derivation of an effective interaction constructed from a nuclear matter G-matrix based on modern forces in a large model space adequate
for neutron-rich nuclei in the A~100 mass region.
- Self-consistent investigations of spectroscopic properties of even-even nuclei with neutron number N~60 aiming to a realistic description
of shape coexistence phenomena identified experimentally.
- Beyond-mean-field description of the Gamow-Teller beta decay strength distributions and half-lives for proton-rich nuclei in the A~70 mass
region and neutron-rich  nuclei in the A~100 region and comparison with the data obtained using a Total Absorption Spectrometer.
- Identification of two-body correlations relevant for the structure and dynamics of proton-rich nuclei in the A~70 region.
- Self consistent investigation of structure and dynamics of exotic nuclei with close to extreme N/Z ratio aiming to testing the fundamental
  interactions and symmetries.
